Abstract
Survival of patients with localized cancer of the esophagus treated with surgery and/or radiotherapy(RT) has been very poor. This has led to the incoporation of effective cisplatinbased chemotherapy(CT) with RT or surgery(OP) sequentially with
encouraging results.
Since 1987, YUCC activated a nonrandomized treatment to evaluate 5000-6000 cGy radiation treatment following 2 ro 3 courses of 5-FU and Cisplatin with or without surgery. The current analysis was carried out on the 89 evaluable patients treated
by
3
groups of treatment modalities. Thirty-six patients were entered into RT alone group, 39 patients were CT+RT group and 14 patients were CT+OP+RT group. The survival for the entire patients at 12 and 24 months is 40.7% and 19.1%, respectively. The
two-year survival for the RT alone, CT+RT group and CT+OP+RT group are 21.4%, 18.2% and 17.4%.
We conclude that induction chemotherapy with or without operation is not superior to RT alone in patients with localized cancer of the esophagus. Further studies are needed to continue to improve on these results.
